Pakistani soldiers die in 'unprovoked' shelling on Kashmir border

The deaths come amid a dispute between India and Pakistan, which has intensified since militants attacked an Indian military camp.

Seven soldiers have been killed by Indian forces in an "unprovoked" attack in the disputed Kashmir region, Pakistan has claimed.

The Pakistani military said its soldiers were killed in the Bhimber district on the Line of Control, the border which separates Indian and Pakistani-controlled areas of Kashmir.

In a statement, it said: "Pakistani troops, while responding to Indian unprovoked firing, targeted Indian posts effectively."

Foreign Ministry spokesman Nafees Zakaria condemned the alleged attack and said Pakistani soldiers had responded "in befitting manner".

Shelling over the border has intensified since an attack on an Indian military base in September, in which 17 soldiers died.

Delhi blamed the attack on a Pakistani militant group - an allegation dismissed by Pakistan.

India said it had responded with "surgical strikes" across the heavily militarised border, but the Pakistani government denied these had taken place.

The dispute comes amid protests against Indian rule in Kashmir, sparked by the killing of rebel leader Burhan Wani in July.

Since the death of the 22-year-old almost 90 people have been killed in clashes with security forces in Indian-administered Kashmir.

The region has been divided between India and Pakistan since the end of British rule in 1947 - but both claim the Himalayan territory in full X(
