I think that Le Pen's recent move will win her much more support :D

French presidential candidate Marine Le Pen has said she will make a defeated rival her prime minister, if elected.

Ms Le Pen, of the far-right (ex) National Front, chose Nicolas Dupont-Aignan, of the mainstream nationalist "Stand Up France" in an apparent bid to attract his voters.

Mr Dupont-Aignan had already backed Ms Le Pen for the second round :ymparty:

Dupont-Aignan reached less than 4.70% in presidential. So it is not a great threat. Moreover, his micro-party claimed to restore Gaullisme (Charles de Gaulle's legacy). And now he joined Le Pen (Petain's legacy, sorry for people unfamiliar with french history during Nazi occupation).

So many of his own supporters are upset.

Some mean tongues explain his sudden conversion by the fact his party did not reach 5%.

Why ?

In France, if a candidate reaches 5% of votes, State will refund the party by covering its expenses during the campaign. Under 5% it has to pay with its own cash. Le Pen might help to receive money (by Putin, some say).

The other reason might be that Le Pen gives him a seat of PM, but as it is very unlikely that National Front wins the election, this man is just a fool.

I know very little of the history of French politics - it is very different from the UK's system

But from what I have seen over the past few weeks NONE of the original candidates are good enough or honest enough to run such a powerful country as France

I genuinely believe Le Pen to best the best of an extremely bad bunch :ymapplause:

To me Macron comes across as a WIMP with an Oedipus complex fulfilled by his marriage to an extremely powerful and intelligent woman =))

Marine Le Pen is charged to have stolen million from UE, so not a honest good girl :D
She leads now her Dad's party, so she is a fille à Papa who get rid of her father when she expelled him from the leadership.

As French joke, France is disputed between 2 Freudian Oedipian cases : the one who killed her Dad and the one who married his Mum

Macron and Le Pen both claim debate success =))

The two French presidential candidates have each claimed success in "exposing" their rival in the final TV debate ahead of Sunday's second-round run-off.

Centrist Emmanuel Macron and the far-right's Marine Le Pen traded insults for more than two hours, arguing over terrorism, the economy and Europe.

Mr Macron appeared to cement his position as the front-runner.

French pundits, newspapers and a highly regarded viewers' poll all declared him the most convincing.

In an interview after Wednesday evening's debate, Ms Le Pen said she had wanted to show French voters that Mr Macron was part of the old system.

"Above all I decided to lift the veil, with a certain amount of success I believe, on: Who is Mr Macron? Where does he come from? What are the interests he is defending? What is his vision for France?" she told BFMTV after the debate.

"Because the least one can say is that the fact that he is the darling of the system."

Speaking to French radio on Thursday morning, Mr Macron said the debate had exposed the true nature of Ms Le Pen and her National Front party:

"Mrs Le Pen has shown something: it is that she does not love liberty. She's shown it in how she relates with journalists, she's shown it constantly in the positions that she has taken on same-sex couples, on women... and on the freedom of the press.

"And so one can be sure that with me, sure I'm totally committed to my project, but with me goes the total protection of the democratic framework within which we can disagree."
What happened in the debate?

Mr Macron enjoys a healthy lead in the opinion polls. But during the key debate, Ms Le Pen lambasted him on his record as economy minister in the Socialist government - a post he quit to form his En Marche! movement.

The National Front candidate accused him of being "the candidate of savage globalisation" and said his version of France "is a trading room, where it will be everyone fighting for themselves".

In turn, Mr Macron said Ms Le Pen had openly lied, proposed nothing and exaggerated the concerns of the public. "The high priestess of fear is sitting before me," he said.

Ms Le Pen accused him of complacency about the threat of radical Islamist terrorism. "Security and terrorism are major issues that are completely missing from your programme," she said.

But in response, Mr Macron said the measures she proposed - "eradicating" Islamic fundamentalism by shutting down extremist mosques, and expelling preachers of hate - were "snake oil" that played into terrorists' hands and the desire they had for a "civil war".

They also clashed on the future of the European Union - another issue where they are clearly opposed.

Ms Le Pen has said she would call for an in-out referendum on EU membership, and in recent days declared the euro currency finished.

This turned into a tense, at times incendiary exchange, between two leaders with starkly opposing ideas about the road France needs to take.

Marine Le Pen, who lags badly in the opinion polls, had clearly decided that the best tactic was to launch a full-frontal attack on Emmanuel Macron.

Constantly throughout the debate she threw insults and allegations at him, accusing him of being part of the discredited existing order.

But there was little substance to her attacks, and over and again Mr Macron was able to expose the weaknesses in her arguments - especially over the economy and the euro.

The debate will have done nothing to alter his position as clear favourite in Sunday's vote.

What was the viewers' verdict?

Both candidates were hoping to make an impression on the estimated 18% of undecided voters in the first election the country has ever held without a candidate from the two traditional mainstream parties.

BFMTV found viewers who had watched the debate had a more favourable view of Mr Macron than Ms Le Pen in most categories.

He was the "most convincing" of the pair in the opinion of 63% of those interviewed.

Mr Macron was also deemed the "most convincing" for two-thirds of those who voted for both left-wing candidate Jean-Luc Mélenchon in the first round, and for 58% of those who voted for Republican François Fillon.

Mr Macron also led among voters when they were asked about which candidate was most honest, was most aligned with the voters' values and had the best plans.

The BFMTV poll was carried out among 1,314 people over the age of 18 who watched the television debate.

Wednesday night's debate marked the last time the two candidates faced each other before Sunday's vote.

Just two days of campaigning remain before reporting restrictions come into force late on Friday evening - and remain in place until polls close on Sunday.

How did the French press react?

French newspapers were taken aback by the open hostility on display during Tuesday night's debate.

Le Figaro saw Ms Le Pen adopt a "strategy of total war that consisted of bombarding her opponent without respite". Mr Macron, it says, "dominated his opponent on economic issues" during a debate of "unprecedented brutality".

Liberation accuses Ms Le Pen of "drowning the debate in an avalanche of disinformation" and publishes a list of what it says are false or exaggerated statements made by her.

Le Monde also firmly comes down on the side of Mr Macron, who it says "repeatedly denounced the 'nonsense' by the candidate of the National Front - often rightly".

Les Echos takes issue with the aggressive tone of the debate, saying the candidates "spent more time attacking each other" than explaining future reforms.

That's the same thing with the supporters : pro Le Pen would claim she was the best and pro Macron the contrary.

Such debates is aimed to convince hesitating people. I doubt it has even an effect on abstentions.

Obama's support to Macron might not be a good idea : 1/ USA are very unpopular among traditional electors in France ; 2/ Most of media and social networks have translated the adjective 'liberal' given by Obama about Macron by 'liberal' in French, which is a wrong translation : in French, liberal means free exchange, free trade and capitalism, without any notion of 'humanism'.

Security alerts as campaigning ends

Separate security alerts in and around Paris have marred the final day of campaigning ahead of Sunday's French presidential election.

A suspected radical Islamist possessing weapons and a pledge of allegiance to ISIS was arrested north of the capital.

And Greenpeace activists scaled the Eiffel Tower to unfurl a banner, sparking an emergency police meeting.

Centrist candidate Emmanuel Macron will take on far-right rival, Marine Le Pen, in Sunday's final round of the poll.

Various opinion polls have suggested a lead of 20 percentage points or more for Mr Macron.

The man arrested in Evreux, north-west of Paris, was a convert to Islam who had been under close surveillance since 2014 because of radicalisation.

Le Monde said he was a 34-year-old former soldier who was detained near an airbase.

A USB stick with a pledge of allegiance to so-called Islamic State, a copy of the Koran and ISIS flags were found in his car, sources said.

Two revolvers, a shotgun and ammunition were later found hidden close to the base.

Three days before the first round of voting on 23 April, police officer Xavier Jugelé was killed by convicted criminal Karim Cheurfi while on duty on the Champs Elysées. ISIS claimed to be behind that attack.

France is still under a state of emergency brought in after the Paris attacks of November 2015.

Police were forced to admit flaws in procedures after the Greenpeace activists scaled the north face of the Eiffel Tower to unfurl a banner reading "Liberté, égalité, fraternité" (Liberty, Equality, Fraternity). Another word, "Resist", was written in opposition to Ms Le Pen.

"We wanted to say we are against the rise of nationalism and authoritarianism in France and in other countries," Greenpeace France's head, Jean-Francois Julliard, said.

After an emergency meeting, police prefect Michel Delpuech said: "Above and beyond the motives, this publicity stunt, in the current climate, exposes faults in the security arrangements at the Eiffel Tower."

About a dozen Greenpeace activists were arrested.

There was high security around Ms Le Pen too, as she campaigned in Reims, where she appeared to have to protect herself from missiles as she was driven away from the famous cathedral.

A day before, Ms Le Pen had been pelted with eggs in Brittany.

There were other violent protests against both candidates in Paris earlier this week and on Friday students blocked schools with rubbish bins and slogans saying: "Neither Le Pen nor Macron." =))

Mr Macron spent his final day of campaigning in Rodez, in the south.

What happens after Sunday?

Mr Macron and Ms Le Pen came top of the 11 candidates in total who participated in the first round of voting.

While the outcome of Sunday's second round should be clear that evening, the results will be officially proclaimed by France's constitutional council on Thursday, 11 May.

Sunday, 14 May, marks the end of outgoing President François Hollande's term, and is the latest possible date for the inauguration and official transfer of power to his successor.

You can follow the French election on the BBC News website.

On TV, you can watch a BBC World News Election Special, from 18:30 BST (17:30 GMT / 19:30 local time in France) on Sunday, which will be broadcast on BBC News in the UK and on BBC World News internationally, with Christian Fraser presenting from Paris.

For radio, BBC World Service will broadcast a special extended edition of Newshour from Paris at 18:00 GMT on Sunday.

Shock graph reveals MILLIONS of voters are planning a boycott

The National Front could benefit if the suggested 14 million French voters abstain on Sunday, as new polls reveal that almost half of supporters of the candidate Nicolas Dupont-Aignan in the first round will vote for Marine Le Pen. :ymapplause:

The millions of French who plan to not vote in Sunday’s election could help the National Front’s Marine Le Pen to the Elysee, as their loyal supporters are more likely to vote no matter what. :ymparty:

According to polls from the Cevipof, up to 32 per cent of French people will not vote for either Ms Le Pen or the Centrist Emmanuel Macron, which would be the highest number ever.

They will “vote blanc”, which is a protest vote when people go to the polling station to vote but give in a blank ballot paper.

One activist, Rudolph, has described the prudential election as a choice between “two devils: fascism and finance”. 8-}

He is one of the many people who will not be voting on Sunday and would “rather take the fight to the streets”.

According to an Ifop poll, which is based on 100 voters for each candidate, more than a third of people who voted for Jean-Luc Melenchon and Nicolas Dupont-Aignan in the first round will abstain on Sunday’s crunch election

ISIS calls for terror attacks on French election

Article in propaganda magazine Rumiyah called for terror attacks at elections

Allegedly called for death of candidates Marine Le Pen and Emmanuel Macron

Centrist Emmanuel Macron has a substantial lead in polls and is 24 points ahead

ISIS has allegedly called for lone wolf extremists to kill the French presidential candidates and burn down polling stations during the upcoming election.

An article in the terror group's propaganda magazine, Rumiyah, reportedly called for the deaths of Marine Le Pen and Emmanuel Macron when the country goes to the polls on Sunday.

A French edition of the magazine the article is said to state: 'Don't forget your duty as a Muslim. Choose a candidate to kill & polling station to burn.'

An article in the terror group's propaganda magazine, Rumiyah, reportedly called for the deaths of Marine Le Pen and Emmanuel Macron (pictured) when the country goes to the polls on Sunday

The claims were reported in financial new blog Zero Hedge, which has been criticised for its extreme and sometimes pro-Russian content.

Rumiyah magazine urges ISIS supporters to put their faith in Allah over a 'false deity' and Western democracies.

Le Pen and Macron are currently making a final push for votes on the last day of campaigning before the election.

Centrist Macron has a substantial lead, with one poll putting him 60 points ahead of Le Pen.

An Ifop poll says he leads Le Pen 63 per cent to 37 per cent. Four other surveys show Macron on 62 and Le Pen on 38.

Le Pen, who is known for her anti-Islam rhetoric, has vowed to fight terrorism during the her campaign

This margin is not as big as the one that centre-right candidate Jacques Chirac beat Marine's father Jean-Marie Le Pen by in 2002, gaining 82.2 per cent of the vote over Le Pen's 17.8 per cent.

The National Front party has - significantly - not even announced where their candidate will be after polls close on Sunday evening following the second and final round of voting.

Le Pen, who is known for her anti-Islam rhetoric, has vowed to fight terrorism during the her campaign.

Macron defeats Le Pen to become president  X(

Centrist candidate Emmanuel Macron has decisively won the French presidential election, projected results say.

Mr Macron defeated far-right candidate Marine Le Pen by about 65.5% to 34.5% to become, at 39, the country's youngest president, the results show.

Mr Macron will also become the first president from outside the two traditional main parties since the modern republic's foundation in 1958.

He said that a new page was being turned in French history.

"I want it to be a page of hope and renewed trust," he said.

"He" has not decisively win. 43% of his voters did it not for himself but against Le Pen.

The true polls will happen in June 11th and 17th, when French will elect their parliament. It might be hard for Macron to obtain a comfortable majority.
