Iraq issues arrest warrant for vice president on terrorism charges

BAGHDAD — Iraq’s Shiite-dominated government accused its Sunni vice president of terrorism on Monday, plunging the country into its deepest political crisis in years only one day after U.S. troops departed.

As an arrest warrant was issued for Tariq al-Hashimi, three men said on Iraqi television that they had worked as his bodyguards and had carried out bombings and assassinations, killing as many as a half-dozen people.

They said Hashimi knew what they were doing. But many Iraqis questioned whether the allegations rang true.

Neither Hashimi nor his spokesman could immediately be reached for comment. Hashimi was in the semi-autonomous region of Kurdistan holding crisis talks with Kurdish leaders.

Iraqi Kurds called for calm, as did U.S. officials in Washington. The charges came despite talks over the weekend among President Jalal Talabani, Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, Sunni politicians and U.S. embassy officials that appeared to resolve the issue with the creation of a judicial committee to “thoroughly investigate” the terrorism charges.

“We are closely monitoring these reports that an arrest warrant has been issued, in particular, for vice president al-Hashimi,” said State Department spokeswomanVictoria Nuland. “We are talking to all of the parties. We’ve expressed our concern regarding these developments. We’re urging all political sides in Iraq to work out their differences peaceably, politically, through dialogue, and certainly in a manner that is consistent with democratic political processes and international standards of rule of law.”

The three men speaking on television offered startling details of what they said were their missions – how an ID was used to get past a checkpoint, how explosives were packed in a black, plastic garbage bag, how they were told precisely the minute that convoys would be passing.

“Tariq al-Hashimi himself always gave me a white envelope containing $3,000, except for one time,” said one of the men, Ahmad Shawqi Aljburi, who claimed he went on at least six missions that included bombings and assassinations.

Aljburi asserted that on the last mission, the vice president asked him to provide a daily report diagramming the position of the tanks and checkpoints helping to protect Baghdad’s Green Zone.

“I want to expose the reality of this criminal, al-Hashimi,” Aljburi said. “He destroyed me and my family.” Aljburi alleged that the vice president had threatened that he and his family would be assassinated if Aljburi did not cooperate.

His allegations and those of the two others could not be confirmed.

In recent months, Maliki, a Shiite, has overseen the arrest of hundreds of suspected sympathizers of Saddam Hussein’s Baath Party. His supporters say he is trying to halt acts of terrorism that have slowed but hardly disappeared in Iraq. On Monday alone, at least three explosions rocked Baghdad,

But Maliki’s critics say he has gone overboard in consolidating his power, particularly now that the U.S. military has left. On Sunday, tensions soared when Maliki asked parliament to hold a no-confidence vote that would enable him to dismiss another top Sunni official, Deputy Prime Minister Saleh al-Mutlak.

It is the begining of the civil war in Iraq . Almaliki have his own millitia that committed plenty of atrocities against sunnis . the sunnis did the same by joining alQaida and muqtad ,,,well , he attacked everyone including the american . With 2 year left in the office Almaliki will clean up the sunnis and ba'athist and I do not believe he will back down , other wise they will not openly televise it .

Sunni politicians walked out of the nation’s parliament and the governor and most members of the provincial council have fled to northern Kurdistan, and on Saturday, the main highway linking Baghdad to the northern city of Kirkuk was blocked for a third day by Shiite militiamen who, residents said, belong to Moqtada al-Sadr’s Mahdi Army.

and here comes to annoying part :D :D

Hashimi thanks Talabani and Barzani for their stands
12/20/2011 6:52 PM

ARBIL / Aswat al-Iraq: Iraqi Vice-President Tariq al-Hashimi thanked today the stands adopted by President Jalal Talabani and Kurdish Region President Masoud Barzani.

In a press conference here praised that Iraq has some personalities that work with justice and aim for the stability and flourishment for Iraq .

He rejected the idea of internationalizing the case, but will support the Iraqi law provided he gets the lowest limit of justice.

Barzani regarded the attitude against Hashimi at Baghdad International Airport as "unacceptable", pointing that the case "is moving for further tensions", thus "suggesting an urgent national conference to save the political process, other wise the country will plunge in undesired ends".

Iraqi Interior Ministry announced yesterday the issuance of arrest warrant and broadcasted the confessions of Hashimi's bodyguards that he ordered them to implement terrorist acts in 2009.

Kurds shouldnt take any party in this matter imo. Bathist members did not deserve to be backed by Kurds whom they killed by hundreds of thousands.

The day this failure of history calles iraq is going to disappear comes closer and closer.
