Anti christian riots in 1955, Istanbul. Exhibit

PostAuthor: tomjez » Wed Sep 07, 2005 10:22 am

I was yesterday to the opening of photo exhibit, about the anti christian riots of 6 and 7 september in Istanbul
Very interesting pictures, they had never been seen before (military archives).

I wondered why police was here though. I had the answer 15 minutes after the begenning. MHP was here (at least waw, 5 guys!) and tried to prevent the exhibit from taking place. They threw a few photos in the street, yelled something about turkey staying turk and people don't liking it having to go (the usual bullshit), and were quickly kicked out by policemen.

BAD NEWS: they're still here, they're still stupid. GOOD NEWS: they were 5, nobody gave a fuck, police dealt with them, and the exhibit took place anyway. Pure comedy, as one of the organizators told me.

Story (in french...) and photos (goooood ones) on my blog

I know some people here who will start to say bad thing about "mongols" and "fascist turks": please remember: MHP's were 5, Turkish televisions and newspapers talked about this exhibit in good words...

Nice pictures... I can read a little bit French too. I would like to see the pictures. Off course we can use them. I also maybe want to use your pictures of South Kurdistan for a Kurdish website if you don't mind.

The MHP is loosing more and more power if democratisation continues. 8)
The suppression of ethnic cultures and minority religious groups in attempting to forge a modern nation were not unique to Turkey but occurred in very similar ways in its European neighbours - Bruinessen.
